Lafarge takes slag from the Ispat Inland steel mill in nearby East Chicago, which saves Ispat the cost of disposing of the slag and provides Lafarge with a steady source of material that it processes into cement (while using less energy than a conventional cement kiln). In it s first year of operation, the facility processed about 120,000 tons of slag and produced 110,000 tons of high-quality NewCem-brand slag cement, which the company has found performs better than regular cement.
