American Society of Civil Engineers

The University of Washington will host the American Society of Civil Engineers’ 20th annual National Concrete Canoe Competition June 14-16.

Organized by the ASCE, the National Concrete Canoe Competition is made possible by sponsors, including founding sponsor Master Builders Inc., now the admixture business line of BASF. Co-sponsors are the American Concrete Institute, Baker Concrete Construction Inc., Bentley Systems Inc., Holcim (U.S.) Inc., Norchem, ICS Penetron, Pennoni Associates Inc., Propex Concrete Systems and U.S. Silica Co.

More than 250 teams work throughout the year to qualify for the national competition, which includes both academic and race events. Teams submit a design paper and deliver a business presentation describing their project. Points are earned for the aesthetics and durability of the final product and a cross section detailing construction materials and methods. The five race events — women’s slalom/endurance, men’s slalom/endurance, women’s sprint, men’s sprint, co-ed sprint — account for 25 percent of the overall scoring.

Winners from 18 regional competitions held each spring throughout the United States qualify for the national competition, where they compete for scholarship money.
