Research examines drop-in anchor failures
Members of the Concrete Sawing & Drilling Association have observed, over the last few years, failures when using half-inch drop-in anchors. Since these failures pose a serious hazard to operators, the CSDA sponsored a senior engineering project at the University of Toledo College of Engineering to evaluate the reasons behind them.
Skip Aston, chair of the CSDA Safety Committee, worked with the students to develop and execute research that would evaluate the performance of half-inch drop-in anchors in core drilling applications. Based on their results, the students discovered important installation parameters when using half-inch drop-in anchors, including: anchors being installed perpendicular to the surface, anchor countersink depth being limited to 1/2 inch, fully set expansion plugs, and threaded rods being fully engaged with the anchor.
