Initially, the floor of the Arts and Crafts Room on the main floor of the Children's Museum of Phoenix was going to be polished. But the existing concrete proved to be too inconsistent for polishing. Instead, the floor was coated with a Miracote overlayment for a stenciling workshop. However, even more was in store.

Ray Anger of Arizona-based Decorative Concrete Staining & Scoring Inc. took charge of beautifying the floor, applying an acid stain finish with the help of products supplied by W.R. Meadows Inc. To start, he abraded the entire floor. He applied an epoxy bonding agent for primer, then improved its grip by hand-scattering 16-grit coarse sand from Borders Construction Specialties in Phoenix. He cleaned up, then caulked edges and areas around cabinets to prep for placement of W.R. Meadows Floor-Top STG self-leveling overlay, which would flow into any crevice left unprotected. A Phoenix company, Flo-Tech Inc., pumped the overlay into the room.

The next day, Anger applied two treatments of Terracotta Clay acid stain from Cohill's Building Specialties Inc. After a 12-hour wait, the floor was neutralized and scrubbed. Air conditioning and ventilation were used to dry the floor, and during the dry time, petroglyph designs were installed by Tamryn Doolan, owner of Surface Gel Tek and the Flattoo stencil brand. Twelve hours later came two applications of a W.R. Meadows Decra-Seal. Two applications of Bellatrix Premium Concrete Enhancer by W.R. Meadows were installed the following day to complete the project.

The handsome floor is the finishing touch on the series of projects completed at the Children's Museum in early 2010. "It's going to have an effect on the industry", Anger says. "That's why we did it."
