Project Description
Concrete stains were used to improve the appearance of a plain grey sidewalk leading to the historic entry steps of the old 1913 school building, which is now a museum. At the same time, participants in Bob Harris' Concrete Staining Fundamentals workshop got hands-on practice while learning about the steps necessary to complete a successful basic acid-stain project.

Neutra Clean, sodium metasilicate cleaner from Kemiko, was used to prepare the bare concrete for staining. Then, Kemiko Stone Tone stain in Malay Tan was used for an all-over background hue. After the stain application, Neutra Clean was used again to thoroughly neutralize the stain residues efficiently. Participants also, learned to apply accent colors and graphics using Flatoos donated by Surface Gel Tek, along with Tek Gel for profiling. A sampling of other stains and dyes, including Smith Paints and Brickform ARTesian stains, provided examples of the different ways colors can perform on concrete. The final hardscape was sealed with an acrylic sealer.

Bob Harris commented on his experience working at the museum: "It is very gratifying to know that all of the artisans' work has become a permanent feature of the museum for many future generations to enjoy through the years. Not only has all of the work performed at the museum enhanced the overall curb appeal of the property, it has provided a canvas for children to explore and develop their own conclusions about the work, which is what the Phoenix children's museum is about. This type of environment is truly special when one reflects on what is happening."
