Project Description:
The Koi Pond Mural has captured the imagination of young museum visitors who pretend to swim and splash on top of the glistening, reflective surface. In advance of the Concrete Decor Show & Decorative Concrete Spring Training, Miracote brought together a diverse team to create the faux koi pond inside the museum.
Julio Hallack, of California-based Concrete by Hallack, and Miracote's own Trevor Foster prepared the floor and placed the Mirastamp system over a primer. They used Mirastamp Liquid Release with Proline's Light Sandstone texture skins to add natural-looking textures. Next, they hand-sculpted the topping to define an edge and create the appearance of individual stones, accentuated by pewter-colored Polyblend Sanded Grout. Several colors of Mirastain II, including Dodge City Tan and Desert Rose, were combined to provide the tonality of rock. Within the rock-like boundaries, MPC microtopping was used to create a smooth surface. Then, Trevor sprayed subtle shadings of Mirastain II blues and greens over the microtopping to simulate the appearance of water. Muralist and fine artist Shay Davis was part of the team. He painted life-like koi fish swimming among realistic lily pads. The finishing touch was adding the sheen of GlazeTop to create the effect of water, while a matte finish was used on the stamped area.
Miracote Mirastamp is a polymer-modified two-component decorative thin-stamped overlayment that can be used to replicate paving finishes. It was selected because it is durable enough for high traffic in the museum. The total system was used in this project, including the priming application, latex-modified mortar pigmented with Miracote Liquid Pigment, Miracote liquid release, pigmented dry powders, Miracote colored stains and Miracote protective sealers.
