Initiative urges G8 leaders to adopt sectoral approaches

The World Business Council for Sustainable Development’s Cement Sustainability Initiative, currently cochaired by Lafarge and Taiheiyo Cement, has called on G8 members and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change to accelerate the creation of a policy framework that will allow the development of effective sectoral approaches. At a meeting in Paris, Bruno Lafont, chairman and CEO of Lafarge, was joined by the President of the WBCSD, Bjorn Stigson, in encouraging the concept of sectoral approaches to be tabled at the G8 Summit. The cement sector is best positioned to adopt a sectoral approach on carbon dioxide emissions, thanks to a measuring and reporting protocol developed in 2002 by the WBCSD’s Cement Sustainability Initiative. This protocol is now being used by 80 percent of the world’s cement industry. ? www.csiprogress2007.org
