More than 250 teams work throughout the year to qualify for the national competition, which includes both academic and race events. Teams submit a design paper and deliver a business presentation describing their project. Points are earned for the aesthetics and durability of the final product and a cross section detailing construction materials and methods. The five race events — women’s slalom/ endurance, men’s slalom/endurance, women’s sprint, men’s sprint, co-ed sprint — account for 25 percent of the overall scoring.

Winners from 18 regional competitions held each spring throughout the United States qualify for the national competition, where they compete for scholarship money.
