Hycrete Chosen for “Little Island” – Pier 55 Renovation Project in New York City

Hycrete, Inc., has been chosen as the waterproofing and anti-corrosion admixture for the "Little Island" Pier 55 Project in New York.
Hycrete, Inc., a leader in waterproofing and corrosion protection technologies for concrete, is proud to announce that it has been chosen as the waterproofing and anti-corrosion admixture for the “Little Island” Pier 55 Project in New York. Hycrete was used in the deck slab and utility room structure at the soon to be opened Pier 55 park project. This project is located on the Hudson River near 14th Street in downtown Manhattan.

Due to the extensive damage caused by Hurricane Sandy, the pier was decommissioned and required significant repairs. Billionaire Barry Diller worked with the Hudson River Park Trust to transform the former pier into an immersive two-acre park. This park features unique concrete pads in the shape of flower petals that extend from the Hudson River to provide support for the park’s green space.

Design inspiration

The reimagined design resulted from a collaboration between both Heatherwick Studio and Mathews Nielsen Landscape Architects. Their aim was to create a visually stunning architectural design that resembled a leaf floating on top of the water. The two firms hope to create “an oasis from urban life which would allow visitors to play, relax, imagine and restore.”

They selected Hycrete’s W1002 for the project to protect the it from the Hudson River’s rough brackish water. Hycrete’s waterproofing and anti-corrosion admixtures’ dual-action protection made it the perfect choice. This product will protect the park’s most critical areas from the detrimental effects of freeze-thaw, spalling, and chloride ingress. The project used nearly 1000 yards of Hycrete treated concrete. This park will become one of the landmark destinations for tourists and New York residents alike. “Little Island” plans to open to the public in the Spring of 2021.

Hycrete continues to provide both innovative and cost-effective waterproofing and anti-corrosion solutions for protecting the world’s most widely used building material – concrete. The company strives to innovate within the waterproofing design space. Hycrete also offers the optimal choice for concrete corrosion protection and waterproofing, contributing to our buildings, roads, and bridges’ increased durability and lifespan.
