Penetron Provides Waterproofing and Durability for Below-Grade Concrete Structures in North Carolina

PenetronThe Legacy Heritage Apartments in Wake Forest, North Carolina, welcomed their first residents in August 2022. Thanks to previous success in similar residential projects, the Penetron System was specified as the optimal concrete waterproofing solution.

Wake Forest is a charming southern town about forty minutes northeast of Raleigh and part of the Raleigh-Durham-Cary metropolitan area in central North Carolina. Rated by Forbes magazine in 2007 as one of the fastest-growing suburbs in the country, the town currently has about 48,000 inhabitants and continues to grow at a double-digit pace. The historical and vibrant downtown district features many shops, art galleries, and cafés housed in preserved and restored historic buildings.

Owned and operated by the Goldberg Companies Inc. and designed by Cline Design, a North Carolina-based architectural group, the Legacy Heritage Apartments are located in the Heritage subdivision on the east side of Wake Forest. The 306 upscale rental units, spread amongst four floors, are available as 1-, 2- and 3- bedroom apartments (from 748 ft2 to 1,770 ft2) and are offered both as townhomes and apartment units. The amenities include a multi-story clubhouse with rooftop terrace, professional fitness center, gaming lounge with mini bowling, virtual golf simulator, heated outdoor saltwater pool, and a social lounge with a kitchen.

“Familiar with the performance of Penetron’s crystalline products in many Florida projects, KD Construction of Florida, the project’s concrete contractor, worked with Penetron to ensure a durable waterproofing solution for the site’s high groundwater levels,” explains Christopher Chen, Director of The Penetron Group.

Penetron, a topical crystalline material, and Penecrete Mortar, a crystalline waterproofing repair grout, were supplied by Ram Tool Construction Supply and applied to the concrete surfaces of the below-grade elevator pits by KD Construction.

When applied to a prepared concrete surface, the proprietary chemicals in Penetron and Penecrete MORTAR react in a catalytic reaction to generate a permanent crystalline formation throughout the pores and capillary tracts of the concrete. These crystals permanently seal micro-cracks, pores, and capillaries against the penetration of water or liquids from any direction – making the concrete impermeable.

“Easy to apply, the Penetron System provides concrete with a permanent self-healing capability to seal hairline cracks,” adds Christopher Chen. “This virtually eliminates any potential waterproofing-related maintenance and repair costs in the future.”
