SoFi Stadium Constructed With Fiber-Reinforced Concrete

SoFi Stadium

Located at the former site of the Hollywood Park Racetrack in Inglewood, SoFi Stadium is the home of the Los Angeles Rams and Chargers professional football teams. In order to get it ready for the 2020 National Football League (NFL) season, the stadium underwent massive construction. They transformed it into a state-of-the-art facility featuring the latest technology and expanded capacity.

After breaking ground on November 17, 2016, contractors installed Euclid Chemical’s TUF-STRAND™ SF product at a dosage rate of 5 lb/yd³ (3 kg/m³. This served as a synthetic macrofiber reinforcement for the topping slabs of the stadium’s upper-level decks. An alternative to conventional reinforcement like steel and welded wire mesh, fiber-reinforced concrete eliminates the risk for corrosion. It does this by providing improved crack control for the topping slabs.

As a result, Euclid’s TUF-STRAND SF synthetic macrofibers significantly reduced construction costs. Costs were reduced by eliminating the time and labor needed to crane lift and install conventional steel or welded wire mesh. In addition, the stadium is able to regularly seat 70,240 spectators. It also has the ability to expand its capacity to accommodate an additional 30,000 people for special events.

“This is another exciting example of a successful project where macrofibers have been used as a viable alternative to conventional reinforcement—resulting in reduced construction costs, less environmental site impact, improved worker safety, and the ability for the contractor to place more concrete faster with less manpower required,” said Mike Mahoney. Mahoney is the director of marketing and technology for fiber-reinforced concrete at Euclid Chemical. “We are looking forward to seeing more projects like SoFi Stadium constructed with Euclid fibers in the future.”

Sofi Stadium future events

Now the largest stadium in the NFL, SoFi Stadium officially opened its doors to the public on September 8, 2020. This was just in time to kick off its first regular NFL season. Setting the new standard in stadium construction, the 3.1-million-square-foot facility will play host a variety of iconic events. These include the NFL’s Super Bowl LVI in 2022, the College Football Playoff Championship in 2023, and the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Olympic Games in 2028.
