The Systems Behind the Surface: Establishing Matthew Casto’s Expertise

With a Legacy Built on Global Projects and Material Mastery, Casto’s integrative thinking and field expertise are redefining what it means to build with cementitious and resinous materials.

In the world of decorative concrete, where precision, creativity, and durability must converge, few professionals embody the spirit of innovation and system integration like Matthew Casto.

With over three decades of global field experience, Casto has left his fingerprint—literally and figuratively—on some of the most iconic destinations in the themed entertainment industry, including Shanghai Disneyland, Universal Studios Beijing, and the recently opened Universal Epic Universe in Orlando. His work is not just visually compelling—it’s technically advanced, systemically rigorous, and built to last.

But what truly sets Casto apart is not just the scale of his portfolio—it’s the way he thinks.

“Everything is connected,” Casto says. “Not just in concrete, but in life. Systems influence systems. Understanding how components interact—and how to innovate across those lines—is where real expertise lies.”

That mindset has made Casto a sought-after Production Art Director, materials consultant, and technical trainer. Now, through a year-long collaboration with Concrete Decor Magazine, Casto will be sharing his deep knowledge with a wider audience—one specialized, detail-rich article at a time.

A Systems Mindset

At his core, Casto is a systems thinker. He understands that themed construction is not about single products—it’s about performance ecosystems.

In his decades of work across Asia, Europe, and the U.S., Casto has consistently pushed boundaries in decorative concrete. He’s led the development and installation of hybrid systems—such as imprinted thermal plastics paired with polyaspartic topcoats—and pioneered the cross-integration of materials typically confined to specific domains. His work in expanding GFRC applications, particularly for vertical and sculptural theming, has helped production teams solve previously intractable design and installation challenges.

His innovation mindset was shaped during his time as Director of Technical Services and later Managing Director for Bomanite, where he oversaw global product development and system performance testing. That experience instilled a deep understanding of how formulations, installation conditions, and performance expectations must align in decorative systems.

Notable contributions include:

  • Development of Cast-in-place Concrete mosaics
  • Development of Custom imprinted thermal plastic technologies
  • Development of Textured Epoxy Mortars
  • Development of High-performance exterior broadcast-flake systems
  • Development of hybrid performance flooring systems combining artistic intent with functional durability
Project Highlights: Global, Thematic, and Demanding

Casto’s project resume spans continents and genres, including contributions to world events, theme parks, and cinematic environments. His expertise has been applied to globally recognized attractions with highly demanding creative, functional, and technical standards:

  • 2008 Beijing Olympics: Developed a hybrid system to expand parking while maintaining green spaces
  • Disneyland Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge: Integrated concrete and natural stone to create out-of-this-world immersive environments
  • Shanghai Disneyland: Hardscape and flooring systems development as Production Art Director
  • Universal Studios Beijing: Concrete detailing, flooring, and material sequencing across multiple themed zones
  • Universal Epic Universe: Production art direction with a focus on flooring integration, constructability, and system testing under compressed build timelines

Each of these environments required more than creative interpretation—they demanded deep system coordination, technical fluency, and a leadership style that could guide both design development and on-site execution.

Educator, Innovator, Leader

Beyond the jobsite, Casto is a passionate educator. He has developed comprehensive training programs for Universal Studios’ Themed Finishes Department, and led technical workshops in over 20 countries, teaching artisans, contractors, and designers how to build immersive environments from the ground up.

He serves on the Decorative Concrete Council (DCC) Board, and has participated as a speaker at World of Concrete Asia (2019). His education modules—offered in partnership with leading industry suppliers—cover topics ranging from resin system compatibility to concrete surface prep and performance documentation.

“I learn as much as I teach,” Casto explains. “Every jobsite, every workshop, someone brings new insight. That’s what keeps this work alive—it’s evolving.”

What’s Ahead: A Year of Expertise, Shared

Beginning this month, Casto will write a monthly column for Concrete Decor Magazine focused on the specialty systems, methodologies, and material considerations behind world-class decorative concrete work. These articles will go beyond surface-level design tips, diving into topics like:

  • The Hidden Problems in Today’s Concrete
  • Navigating the Challenges of Surface Coloration
  • Aggregates 101
  • The Technological Revolution in Concrete
  • Concrete Repair in Historic Restoration
  • Demystifying Sealers and Resin Coatings
  • What’s Shifting in Decorative Concrete

Each article will be backed by field-tested insights, technical knowledge, and the hard-earned wisdom of a practitioner who has worked on thousands of mockups, samples, and full-scale themed installations.
Two Platforms. One Shared Mission.

This new series marks a natural partnership between CASTO and Concrete Decor Magazine. CASTO, through its Casto’s Corner blog, educates a broad audience of designers, students, and specifiers on the role of constructability in themed environments. Concrete Decor, meanwhile, remains the go-to source for technical insights and professional development in decorative concrete.
Together, the two platforms offer readers both breadth and depth—from high-level inspiration to ground-level execution.

Follow both to stay at the forefront of an industry that’s constantly evolving, and to learn from a master who’s been building its foundations for more than thirty years.
