Alcatraz Island Program Helps Soon-To-Be Veterans Transition To Civilian Life

San Francisco, CA –A group of active duty military personnel is taking the first step in their transition to civilian life by learning a new trade and industry management skills as part of a 12-week program sponsored by the Concrete Preservation Institute (CPI). Media will have the chance to see the hands-on program in action as soon-to-be veterans repair concrete at Alcatraz Island, which is a National Park Service (NPS) site. The program helps the active duty participants get ahead of the veteran-to-civilian transition curve and avoid unemployment and underemployment, while helping the National Park Service address repair needs.

What:Media tour of CPI’s Alcatraz Island repair/preservation projects, worked on by active duty military personnel as part of the Concrete Preservation Institute’s (CPI) Field School program.

Who:Dr. Tanya Komas, PhD, Founding Director, President & CEO of the CPI will lead the tour; MSG David Caleb – U.S. Army, Soldier for Life Program, Deputy Director, Western Region; Pete Warren, BASF Construction Systems; Don Rettig, President of the Owens- Corning Foundation; and active duty military participants will be on hand for comments

When:Tuesday, November 14, 2017; meet 8:15am, boat to Alcatraz departs at 8:45am. Media may take any departing boat back to San Francisco; they leave approx. every half hour

Where:“Alcatraz Landing,” Pier 33, San Francisco; transportation to/from Alcatraz provided
